This Issues Professional:

Luke O'Connor is the stylist behind Grace's gorgeous curls or stick-straight 'dos on the TV show "Will & Grace."

Q:When I first highlight my hair, it's so shiny. But after about three weeks it gets dull. Is this normal, or is it something I'm doing?

A: Yes, this is something that will happen after you highlight or color your hair because when you color your hair your cuticles open so the color can deposit, so your hair swells and feels drier. Use products for color-treated hair; they have a lower pH, which will close the cuticle back up. Also, color-enhancing shampoos and conditioners can punch up the color a little bit. In between highlighting touchups, you can go to your salon and get a semi-permanent color gloss, which adds brightness, especially for red heads because their color fades so quickly.
